WASHINGTON — As the first-ever FDA-approved new drug to treat pain and inflammation and to slow down and reverse the effects of the aging heart disease drug Celebrex, researchers are working on another potential next-generation painkiller — called celecoxib — to combat inflammation and protect the heart.
Celecoxib, which will become available in the United States in March, was developed by AstraZeneca in cooperation with Merck & Co., which has received marketing rights from Johnson & Johnson.
The drug’s drug, called Celebrex, works by inhibiting the enzyme that produces cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is involved in the production of prostaglandins, the substances that cause inflammation and pain. COX-2 inhibitors, including Celebrex, are used to treat conditions such as arthritis and inflammation.
Celecoxib works by inhibiting COX-2, thus relieving the symptoms of inflammation and pain.

Dr. John M. Ricks, a clinical trial leader at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said the drug will likely be prescribed to patients for a number of reasons.
“Celebrex has been a breakthrough medicine for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and a variety of other inflammatory conditions,” Ricks said.
“But it’s not a new drug. We’re trying to develop a new indication for this drug to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, so it can be effective in reducing inflammation. It’s been a breakthrough medicine for patients with a variety of diseases,” Ricks said.
